Every box you draw, every page you burn a stamp into, happens inside your browser. The file never touches a server. Try it below — no account, first download free.
Drop a PDF here, or select a file. Nothing leaves your browser.
1 free redaction, then $7/mo unlimited.
Drawing a black box over text in most PDF viewers — or even in image editors — leaves the original text sitting underneath, in the file's content stream. Anyone can select it, copy it, or extract it with a script in seconds. It has happened to governments, law firms, and journalists.
BLACKOUT's redact tool rebuilds the page content itself: the rectangle you draw is burned into the PDF as solid, opaque geometry over the region you mark, using pdf-lib to regenerate the page rather than paint an image on top of it. What's covered is gone from the exported file.

Does the PDF ever leave my browser?
No. Rendering and redaction both happen client-side. Nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored on a server, ever.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes — one click via Stripe's billing portal. No retention maze, no “are you sure” loops.
What do you store?
Just your email and Stripe subscription status, to check if you have an active subscription. No PDF content, ever.
I paid but I'm on a new browser or device — now what?
There's no password to reset since there's no account. On the tool page, click “Paid already? Restore access” and enter your email — if it has active access, a one-time link arrives to restore it on that browser. The link works once and expires in 15 minutes.
Can it find sensitive data for me?
Auto-detect scans the document's text for emails, phone numbers, card numbers and ID numbers and boxes them for you — in your browser, like everything else. It matches patterns rather than reading the document, so it won't catch names or addresses. Scanned pages are read with OCR first — also in your browser — which adds its own error rate. Treat it as a head start, not a final check.
How many free downloads do I get?
Exactly 1 free redaction per browser, then it's $7/mo for unlimited.
